PDE-5 Inhibition and HIV Risk Conference

The Food and Drug Adiministration (FDA), University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are holding a consensus conference, PDE-5 Inhibition and HIV Risk: Current Concepts and Controversies. PDE-5 inhibitors, such as Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis, are used to treat erectile disfunction. The conference will take place September 26–27, 2005, in Potomac, MD, and will address:

  • PDE-5 use and sexual behavior among at-risk populations
  • PDE-5 use in combination with drugs of abuse
  • Risks and benefits of PDE-5 treatment in at-risk populations

New Approach for Flushing Out Latent HIV Virus

Researcher Dr. David M. Margolis, University of Texas Southwest Medical Center at Dallas, and his associates have found a way to flush out dormant HIV virus, one of the biggest hurdles in trying to eradicate HIV infection. The drug used to expose the hidden virus is valproic acid, a drug commonly used to treat bipolar disorder. NIAID Unveils New Look for Web Site Home Page

A new National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) home page was recently unveiled. In addition to updating the About NIAID and News & Events sections, other sections that will be brought into the new design over the next few months: Labs at NIAID, Research, Research Funding, and Health & Science.
