Library of Congress newspaper holdings are also available on FirstSearch's "Union List of Periodicals." You can limit by format to "newspaper" and then by "state of library" (DC). Most libraries provide access to FirstSearch .

You can also view records from the Library of Congress Catalog. So far, it has holdings for active U.S. titles only, i.e. the ones we are currently receiving.

If you find yourself viewing raw MARC catalog records (with numbered fields), please note the following:

  1. The 362 field gives the dates a newspaper was in publication, NOT the holdings of the Library of Congress.
  2. If the 050 field has a number like 7256X, it usually means we have only one or two loose issues of the title. The X means the paper is stored a large paper folder known as a portfolio. Portfolios usually contain only a few issues at most.
