Started in 2002, the Coral Reef Ecosystem Studies (CRES) program was designed to fill information gaps on the underlying processes that regulate the health of coral reef ecosystems, including human dimensions. CRES projects have provided resource managers with predictive tools and capabilities in order to evaluate alternative management strategies that protect healthy reefs and reverse the decline of degraded ones. The overarching goal of the CRES program is to use scientific information to effect real change to improve the condition of coral reefs. In order to implement this strategy, our program requires that projects include resource managers and key stakeholders as part of the research team or project Management Committee.
