Alternate Title Randomized Study of Web-Based Continuing Education Courses for Improving Physician Performance in Examination and Counseling of Patients on Skin Cancer or Weight Control
Trial Description Computer-based continuing education courses may be effective in improving the skills of primary care doctors to identify skin cancer risk factors, perform skin cancer exams, and counsel patients. They may also improve the skills of primary care doctors to assess and counsel patients on their weight, diet, and physical activity. This randomized clinical trial is studying how well computer-based continuing education courses work in improving doctors’ ability to perform skin cancer or weight control exams and counseling during routine office visits. Eligibility criteria include the following:
Final eligibility for a clinical trial is determined by the health professionals conducting the trial. Doctors will be randomly assigned (have an equal chance of being placed) to one of two groups. Doctors in group one will complete a 1-hour computer-based continuing education course on skin cancer. Before and after the course, and 1 month and 1 year later, they will complete a computer-based test that assesses their knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices related to skin cancer examination and counseling. Patients of doctors in group one will undergo a telephone interview within 1 week after a routine office visit with their doctor. They will be interviewed about their skin examination and skin cancer counseling they received from their doctor. Doctors in group two will complete a 1-hour computer-based continuing education course on weight, diet, and physical activity. Before and after the course, and 1 month and 1 year later, they will complete a computer-based test that assesses their knowledge, attitudes, skills, and practices related to weight, diet, and physical activity assessment and counseling. Patients of doctors in group two will undergo a telephone interview within 1 week after a routine office visit with their doctor. They will be interviewed about the examination and counseling they received from their doctor on weight, diet, and physical activity.
