Boating on the Monongahela National Forest

Boating on the
Monongahela National Forest

All of the lakes on the Monongahela National Forest are small impoundments and boating opportunities are limited to electric motors and can be used at Lake Sherwood, Spruce Knob Lake, and Lake Buffalo.

Lake Sherwood The largest lake on the Monongahela National Forest is Lake Sherwood. Electric boat motors may be used at the Lake Sherwood. Boats and canoes are available for rent from a concessionaire at this 165 acre lake, located within the Lake Sherwood Recreation Area. Three boat launches and a dock are available for public use. One dock is near the concession stand and two are in the campgrounds. Lake Sherwood contains a variety of fish, including bass, bluegills, bullheads, catfish and tiger muskies. Meadow Creek, below Lake Sherwood, is intermittently stocked with trout. One of the most beautiful swimming areas in West Virginia is found at Lake Sherwood. There are two sand beaches, one on the "mainland" and one on an island, which is connected by a scenic footbridge. The swimming area contains a bathhouse complete with showers and flush toilets. Water fountains are dispersed throughout the area. Lifeguards are not provided.

Spruce Knob Lake

Built in 1952 for fishing, the 23-acre Spruce Knob Lake is regularly stocked with trout by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Electric trolling motors are permitted on the lake. There is a small boat launch, parking lot, and vault toilets. A wooden pier along the shoreline provides barrier free access. Numerous small but hungry bluegills along the shoreline make fishing fun for beginning anglers. Swimming is not permitted in the lake. When you have finished fishing at the lake, visit the highest point in WV, Spruce Knob, and stay at Spruce Knob Lake Campground or Gatewood Campground.

Lake Buffalo

Lake Buffalo, located near the town of Bartow is a 22-acre lake that offers fisherman a quiet retreat from cities and is regularly stocked with trout by the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources. Boating is limited to electric trolling motors. Facilities include vault toilets, a sparking lot, and a concrete boat ramp. Some dispersed camping is available in the area. Lake Buffalo also includes an accessible fishing area. Some people prefer to camp at Island Campground, located on State Route 28. Swimming is not permitted at Lake Buffalo.

A state fishing license and a National Forest stamp are required at all Monongahela National Forest Lakes, and if fishing for trout, a trout stamp is required. Please contact the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources for more information on fishing licensing requirements.
