Homeland Security

Led by Marc Witkowski, EES CHS Liaison

In late February 2003, the Center for Homeland Security officially commenced operations at LANL as the main interface to and reflecting the structure of the national Department of Homeland Security (DHS). This large department has undergone many changes and reorganizations as it strives to determine the most effective way to serve the nation. This dynamic structure has led to new offices and potential opportunities for LANL. For example, a recently anncounced organization, the Domestic Nuclear Detection Office (DNDO), can support work at the National Laboratories.

EES Division has a part-time liaison located at the LANL Center for Homeland Security (CHS) to keep EES apprised of developments within DHS for near-term program development.  EES Division has many capabilities to provide in homeland security. Division personnel currently are assisting DHS in the Critical Infrastructure Protection/Decision Support System program (CIP/DSS) and providing support in modeling agriculture, food, water, and key assets in national and metropolitan models within a large model of major critical infrastructures and their primary interdependencies. These coupled models form the foundation of a decision support system that incorporates the results of threat and vulnerabilities assessments.
