Overview

EES-6 applies cutting-edge integrated experimental, computational modeling, and observational studies to complex problems involving subsurface flow and transport, geomaterials, geochemistry, and geology.

EES-6 focuses on projects of national importance in the areas of environment, energy, and defense that integrate field observations, experimental or analytical laboratory investigations, and numerical modeling of earth processes. Key current efforts include studies of geologic carbon sequestration, the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository project, environmental cleanup projects at the Nevada Test Site and at using unique capabilities such as experimentation; radionuclide chemistry, parallel 3-D reactive transport modeling, modeling of both saturated and unsaturated zone hydrology to provide a decision context for stakeholders.

EES-6 also has smaller-scale projects focused on efforts such as assembly of protocells, aerosols, Martian mineralogy, and collidal characterization (see sidebars for more details).

EES-6 has five technical teams listed below with their contacts.

EES-6 also has the Geology and Geochemistry Research Laboratory, a facility dedicated to characterization of earth materials.

Please see the EES Capabilities database for information on the research interests of individual EES-6 staff members.
