Background
David Herman began his career at NWFSC in August 1982. He conducted research on the development and characterization of several types of tissue materials of fish/marine origin suitable for use as stable QC/QA control materials. David has also been actively involved in methods development projects directed toward the analysis of various classes of environmental contaminants in marine biota (e.g., methylsulfonyl metabolites of PCBs/DDTs in various marine mammal tissues, and current use pesticides in the aquatic environment). David has a B.A. in chemistry from Eastern Washington University and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry with specialization in chromatography from the University of Washington.
Current Research
Currently, David is involved in several research projects in which the feeding ecology of marine predators is inferred from the fatty acid profiles of their adipose tissues using Quantitative Fatty Acid Signature Analysis (QFASA). Some of the predators he is evaluating include Cook Inlet belugas, Columbia Basin migratory sea birds and Puget Sound killer whales.
