Position Overview

The Nuclear Materials Science Group (MST-16) is seeking a motivated technician interested in the study of plutonium and other actinide materials. The successful candidate will participate in on-going experiments for the Pit Surveillance, Manufacturing, and Certification programs working as a metallography technician with members of the Metallography team at TA-55. Responsibilities will include; preparation of actinide bearing samples for optical microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and micro-indentation examinations, glovebox maintenance, equipment installation and calibration, and development of process improvements. Thoroughly document all work performed including presentation and publication of results.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated knowledge and experience with materials characterization techniques, e.g., light microscopy, electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, microhardness, microstructural interpretation, or digital image analysis. Experience working in a scientific laboratory environment with responsibilities to complete tasks independently. Demonstrated record of conducting high quality work and completion of deliverables. Work with technicians and scientists as part of a multi-disciplinary team to meet program deliverables and perform actinide materials science investigations. Strong organizational skills as evidenced by the flexibility to work on multiple tasks simultaneously. Demonstrated ability to work with hazardous chemicals in a safe manner. Demonstrated ability to work successfully as a team member in a Category I nuclear facility with minimal supervision. Ability to obtain a Q Clearance, which usually requires US citizenship, and participate in the HRP program. Demonstrated experience maintaining laboratory equipment. Demonstrated experience in handling radioactive materials. Demonstrated ability and willingness to communicate technical results both orally and written to a scientific audience. Considerable knowledge and experience in any of the following technical areas: handling and conducting experiments with solid actinides and actinide bearing solutions; use and maintenance of air and inert atmosphere gloveboxes; working in labs containing radioactive materials; or applying quality assurance requirements to sampling and analysis activities. Knowledge of optical microscopes, digital imaging or image processing software.

Job Description (show details...) collapse

Summary

Provides technical support for activities including research, analysis, development, design, assembly, modification, oversight, repair, and maintenance of a wide variety of equipment used in experimental work (e.g. electro/mechanical apparatus, optical devices, analytical instrumentation, gloveboxes,  lasers, radiographic equipment, high vacuum and pressure systems, and experimental diagnostics). Specific duties may include:  technical support for or conduct of experimental work in materials science, physics, chemistry, biology, geoscience; computational work; instrumentation installation, hookups, data acquisition;  fabrication, assembly, inspection, testing, analytical instrumentation; fielding of experimental diagnostics, ancilliary systems and related hardware; analyzing or validating results and reporting data. May work in areas involving high consequences for safety with limited supervision; e.g. chemicals, biological materials, radioactive materials, high explosives, high-power lasers, accelerators, high-energy devices, gas guns, and X-ray systems. Work may be directly related to national security objectives, requiring the individual to protect and maintain sensitive or classified information. The job could require a Department of Energy (DOE) or other agency security clearance.  Responsibilities often develop into greater depth of knowledge in one functional area, or knowledge in more than one functional area, as one moves up in job level. Possesses demonstrated knowledge and skills in one or more relevant competencies and is recognized as an experienced specialist in one or more relevant competencies.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task. Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised.
  2. Completes necessary training to perform all tasks safely.
  3. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to experimental activities.
  4. Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  5. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.
  6. Assignments may be wide in scope requiring a broad background of experience and capability in multiple areas, but limited technical depth. Non-routine tasks and original work may be performed. Conversely, assignments may be narrower in scope, requiring greater technical depth.
  7. Conducts technical work in the laboratory space or work area, as directed by or discussed with supervisor.  Records procedures, equipment, parameters used in technical work; captures findings and data.  Takes initiative to analyze findings and data, develop preliminary interpretation of results, summarize outcomes, and plan next stages of technical work under the direction of supervisor.  Works with line, program and facilities personnel as appropriate for the conduct of the technical work.
  8. Performs work at a skilled technician level. Performs normal aspects of job independently with limited supervision, performs non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment, and occasionally works without appreciable direction.  Work may be reviewed for desired results.
