Position Overview

The Applied Electromagnetics Group (IAT-2) is responsible for research, applied technology development, and deployment of novel solutions to National Security problems. At IAT-2, the RF & Embedded Systems Team develops quick turn-around solutions as well as systems requiring the full engineering development process. This position will involve embedded FPGA and DSP circuit designs and associated peripheral circuit design. Specific responsibilities involve problem analysis, solution design, processor and support chip selection, schematic capture, board layout, overseeing fabrication, board test, board programming and documentation. Experience with interfacing to analog circuits is a plus. Ability to simulate FPGA and DSP circuit performance using standard modeling tools is a plus. The successful applicant will ensure that work is performed safely and securely, and will provide written reports, documentation, and procedures as required for development and operation of designed systems. Required Skills: Demonstrated experience in the design, fabrication, test and use of embedded systems, to include FPGA and DSP-based processors. Demonstrated working knowledge of engineering design tools including circuit design and board fab CAD packages. Demonstrated programming skills in VHDL and other relevant programming languages. Demonstrated excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication, experience working effectively in a team environment, and a willingness to be flexible in helping with a wide variety of general team tasks. Proven ability to deliver on time, within budget. Ability to obtain DOE "Q" and SCI clearances, which require US citizenship. Desired Skills: Background in circuit simulation and rapid prototyping techniques and tools. Experience participating in benchtop and field experiments, use of standard test and measurement equipment, and a knack for creative and unconventional approaches to problems. Experience in system test methods. Experience with project management milestones (design reviews, RDT&E, etc). Formal technical education is a plus.

Summary

Performs work requiring advanced knowledge, customarily acquired by a prolonged course of specialized intellectual instruction in science or engineering, to creatively and independently address research needs. The phrase work requiring advanced knowledge means work that is predominantly intellectual in nature, and includes work requiring consistent exercise of discretion and judgment, as distinguished from performance of routine mental, manual, mechanical or physical work. Working with peers, is responsible for the development, implementation, and completion of project objectives. Communicates results through internal reports, progress reports to sponsors, or technical publications in peer-reviewed journals. May have significant responsibility for safety/security envelope for projects, the team, or the group. May work in areas involving high consequences for safety, e.g. high explosives, high power lasers, high magnetic fields, accelerators, high energy capacitor banks, gas guns, or X-ray systems. Work may be related to national security objectives, requiring the individual to hold a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance.

  10. Assignments include responsibility for developing specifications for project implementation and verifying that the end product meets expectations and requirements.
  11. Prepares research documentation and may review the documentation of other technicians.
  12. May supply ideas and/or input to proposals.
  13. Assist in development of specifications for product/system/equipment design and/or production processes in support of research.
  14. May contribute to or co-author scientific publications.
  15. May act as lead and review activities of other employees.
  16. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to the work and work area to which assigned.
  17. Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.

Job Knowledge

  • Significant and demonstrated knowledge in the area of practice acquired by experience, certification and/or formal education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of scientific principals, mathematical formulas, computations and data gathering methods.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry, regulatory, DOE/National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) complex codes, standards and criteria pertinent to the particular area of research.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated moderate level of supervising projects and personnel.

Education

  • Position typically requires a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Receives functional and operational direction from the team leader, group leader, or staff member to whom assigned.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • Provides functional and operational direction to supporting technical and/or administrative staff as assigned.

C. Contacts

  • Other laboratory personnel at many levels. Contacts may include technical personnel from other scientific laboratories, universities, and contractors throughout the DOE complex.
