Position Overview

The individual will work as a member of the Shock and Detonation Physics group (DE-9) at Los Alamos National Laboratory. This dynamic group is home to fundamental, mission-critical research on the dynamic properties of high explosives (HE), metals, and other materials. The Group¿s research portfolio includes understanding how energetic materials initiate, how detonation propagates, development of explosives detection methods, and investigation of material properties, including equations of state of materials subjected to high static and dynamic pressure loading. The Group¿s multiple firing sites, laser laboratories and gun facilities support NNSA¿s Science Campaigns, Directed Stockpile Work, the Joint Munitions Program, and many other research programs internal and external to the Laboratory. The primary duties of this position include operations support, editing of technical documents, Access Control management, and custodial support of classified assets. The individual will work closely with and as a part of the management team serving the Group¿s scientists, engineers, and technicians.

Key Position Requirements

Required Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Uses independent judgment to establish the framework for and oversee the day-to-day business, operational, and/or programmatic activities to ensure timeliness, efficiency, integration, and standardization. Under limited direction, composes and/or provides editorial support for a variety of specialized reports, presentations, and/or planning documents related to IWM, organizational objectives, and programmatic deliverables. Under limited direction, coordinates and assists in planning logistics, scheduling, announcements, and administrative facilitation of business, operational, and/or programmatic meetings and conferences. High degree of computer literacy and extensive experience using various editing and publishing software. Demonstrated behavior utilizing tact, diplomacy, discretion, and attention to details in dealing with sensitive or "in confidence" information. Demonstrated experience taking initiative and ownership of multiple and conflicting complex issues in a manner that fosters institutional values, staff productivity, and customer satisfaction. Demonstrated excellent communication skills. Demonstrated willingness to accept flexibility in work assignments. Willingness to assume responsibility of Group¿s classified documents and parts, i.e. serve as the Group¿s primary classified material custodian. Willingness to work in high explosives operations area. Must be able to obtain a DOE ¿Q¿ clearance, which usually requires US citizenship. Desired Skills, Knowledge, Abilities: Knowledge or experience in conduct of operations associated with high explosives operations and access control. Experience and or documented knowledge of the Laboratory¿s classified matter protection program. Experience with Laboratory purchasing, Time & Effort, Data Warehouse, and Oracle software systems. Knowledge of Laboratory¿s ES&H programs. Experience managing training plans and the WQAS. Education, Training, or Licensing: Bachelors level degree or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees.   3. Conducts research and assembles data for assigned projects related to specialized functions, organizations, and/or programs for issues of moderately complex scope where analysis of situations or data requires a review of a variety of factors.
  4. Under established directions, composes a variety of specialized reports, presentations, and/or planning documents related to specialized functions, organizations, and/or programs.
  5. Under established directions, coordinates logistics, scheduling, announcements, and administrative facilitation of business, operational, and/or programmatic meetings and/or conferences.
  6. Assists in the analysis, design, and/or implementation of business, operational, and/or programmatic initiatives to promote and ensure organizational objectives.
  7. May assist in tracking and reporting progress toward business, operational, and/or programmatic goals and objectives.
  8. Acts as a resource regarding, and may provide input on changes to policies, processes, procedures, and guidelines related to specialized functions, organizations, and/or programs.
  9. Handles sensitive information and may handle classified matter.
  10. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and regulatory guidance and governance specific to policies and procedures.
  11. Ensures all results, materials, processes, and final products meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  12. Fosters a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Basic knowledge of and experience in a professional discipline relevant to specialized functions, organizations, and/or programs.
  • Basic knowledge of and experience with standardized software packages and/or required software for specialized functions, organizations, and/or programs.
  • Knowledge of the Laboratory's organizational structure and policies, practices, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of policies, practices, and procedures related to the assigned areas specialized functions.
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations and potential environmental impacts related to the assigned areas specialized functions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to interact effectively with all levels of internal and external personnel, including the ability to build effective working relationships.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow-through to completion on multiple tasks, under strict deadlines and changing priorities.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and/or classified matter.

Education

  • Position typically requires a minimum of two years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Undergraduate coursework may be expected at this level.

Direction

A. Supervision Received

  • Receives functional and operational direction from the assigned manager.

B. Supervision Exercised

  • May provide guidance to administrative assistants and/or students.

C. Contacts

  • Regular contact with all levels of Laboratory staff and management to provide professional support activities and information.
  • May have regular contact with sources and affiliates external to the Laboratory to receive and/or convey information.
