Key Position Requirements

Experience using PCs including word processing packages and Windows applications. Familiarity with LANL labwide software systems including Time and effort, Data Warehouse and Webmail. Effective oral and written communications skills and demonstrated interpersonal skills and work ethics including reliability as an independent worker and as a team member. The successful applicant must be responsible, self-motivated, adaptable and willing to learn new things, and able to work in an environment with multiple demanding and conflicting schedules. Must be physically capable of pulling/running cable and lifting/moving equipment up to forty pounds; Must be capable of walking between buildings, including all hours of the day (after hours included).This position requires a Q clearance. On-call, overtime, shift rotations, holiday and weekend work is required. After qualification, the applicant will be expected to provide on-call support.

Summary

Sets up, coordinates, and monitors the operation of computer equipment, storage and other systems, and/or network operations.  Computer operations typically consist of a twenty four hour per day, seven day a week, 365 day a year schedule. Manages controls in accordance with standard procedures, runs diagnostic tests to detect machine malfunctions, and monitors control panels, mass-storage units and other peripheral equipment. Reports any observed deviations from standard performance to designated on call personnel. In a network environment, functions as a help desk for user connectivity problems. 

Within the high performance computing organization, performs primary system administration operations and tasks on systems to address routine software issues.  Perform hardware support which includes troubleshoots, diagnoses, and performs preventive maintenance tasks on equipment in a multi system environment in the secure and open networks.

Semi-skilled level for those who have gained sufficient experience or training to perform routine tasks independently. Frequent use and application of technical standards, principles, theories, concepts, and techniques. May perform some non-routine tasks requiring the exercise of independent judgment. Provide solutions to a variety of technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. Job includes some responsibility for end products. Works under general supervision. Follows established procedures for routine work. Detailed instructions given for new assignments. Work is reviewed for soundness of technical judgment, overall adequacy and accuracy.

Job Duties

  1. Safety and security are a primary responsibility for all Laboratory employees. Maintains required safety and security training and assures compliance; makes safety and security an integral part of every task.  Takes steps to stop work if unsafe conditions exist or security is compromised. 
  2. Ensures all work, materials, processes and final product meet quality specifications and are completed according to established requirements.
  3. Sets up, coordinates, and monitors the operation of computer console and peripheral equipment to process business, scientific, or engineering data.
  4. Runs diagnostic tests to determine equipment malfunctions.  Monitors systems utilizing diagnostic tests, system messages and scripts.
  5. Responds to error messages, systems crashes, equipment failures, and user concerns.
  6. Identifies failures and initiates proper recovery procedures for production problems.
  7. Performs hard drive and system backups.
  8. Creates scheduled job flows and modifies, submits, tests, and monitors all daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly production application jobs.
  9. Troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs hardware failures to component level on installed equipment.
  10. Performs preventive maintenance tasks on assigned equipment.
  11. Participates in the installation and integration of new systems.
  12. Works closely with on-call personnel to solve software problems of greater severity. 
  13. Performs in-house hardware repair in accordance with provided documentation and diagrams
  14. Performs logistic duties which include inventory control, shipping and receiving of spare parts. Maintains spare parts inventory to perform required hardware repair actions on supported systems. 
  15. Participates in the installation and integration of advanced systems. 
  16. Report hardware failures on vendor supported systems to responsible vendor
  17. Maintains required Status Reports and metrics databases.
  18. Performs trend analysis on hardware failures and repairs.
  19. Handles, identifies, labels, and temporarily store ACREM.
  20. Understands and adheres to all Laboratory and industry regulatory guidance and governance specific to computer operations.
  21. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Demonstrated skill in the operation of all computer equipment, as required by assignment.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of standard LANL software applications.
  • Demonstrated skill in troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing computer hardware to component level.
  • Working knowledge of the Integrated Computer Network tools and diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge UNIX, LINUX and Microsoft computer operating systems.
  • Ability to interpret Facility Monitoring System error messages.
  • ACREM handling requirements.
  • Skilled in oral and written communications.
  • Considerable skill is usually necessary in midrange and mainframe computer operations, math, data processing, and use of job control languages to determine software or hardware issues and system performance.

Education

  • Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and directly relevant experience of 1-2 years.
  • Semi-skilled level for those who have gained sufficient experience or training to perform routine tasks independently.

  • Laboratory personnel and management which may include:
    • Operators on the other shifts to assure continuous computer operations from one shift to another.
    • System Administration Team to report computer operating system software problems encountered. Coordinate and schedule Dedicated System Time for the testing and implementation of new computer operating system software and updates.
    • New System Integration Team to support the installation and integration of advanced HPC systems.
    • Vendor field engineers to report hardware problems encountered on vendor supported systems.
    • Vendor Logistics organizations to arrange for replacement spare parts.
    • Vendor Technical Support Organizations to request Technical Support to complete hardware repairs of supported HPC systems.

Notes To Applicants

Associate's degree or technical certificate in computing or relevant technical field or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience. Desirable: Support in large mainframe or super computing environments, ICN structure and computer security requirements including possessing knowledge of the Lab and DOE security policies.
