Summary
JOB REPOSTED: This job is being re-advertised. Applicants who have applied previously will still be considered and need not re-apply. The individual will work as a member of the Shock & Detonation Physics Group (DE-9) performing leading edge research on the dynamic high pressure response of high explosives, inert materials, and actinides. Primary duties include the fabrication and documentation of high precision experimental assemblies in support of shock wave experiments at a number of experimental facilities, including explosive firing points, powder guns, and gas guns; and participation in experimental operations. This includes taking a leading role in the procurement of components for experimental assemblies, and maintenance and operation of complex equipment. The successful candidate will be expected to gain proficiency in the operation of diagnostic instruments and design considerations in shock wave experiments, and well-versed in shock wave experimental techniques. Position may require outdoor work, work with explosives, work within plutonium facilities, and work at the Nevada Test Site.
Required Skills
Expertise in one or more of the following areas: 1) close-tolerance prototype machining, 2) complex assembly, 3) electronics, or 4) optics. Demonstrated ability to fabricate and document complicated experimental assemblies. Demonstrated experience meeting project objectives on complex technical projects and resolving complex technical issues using applied engineering or scientific principles. Ability to take complex mechanical problems to a practical solution with little or no oversight. Some knowledge of personal computers, especially their use for record keeping, part design and drawings, and data analysis. Familiarity with Laboratory ES&H requirements. Good communication skills, and flexibility. Must be able to obtain a DOE 'Q' clearance, which usually requires US citizenship. Must be willing to work with special nuclear materials (SNM) and high explosives. Must be able and willing to participate in the Human Reliability Program, which involves random drug and alcohol testing and may require a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination.
Desired Skills
Experience working with SNM, reactive materials, and high explosives. Knowledge of electronics and modern electronic digital recording equipment used in laboratory environments. Experience working with and maintaining vacuum and high-pressure systems and components. Experience with shock compression experiments, and laser-based velocimetry methods. Knowledge of the operation and inspection requirements for high-performance accelerating reservoir light gas guns. Knowledge of the operation and alignment of rotating mirror streak cameras. Active "Q" clearance.
Education
A minimum of an associate's degree in a technical area or equivalent combination of education and experience and/or training.
Human Reliability Program (HRP)
This position is subject to the requirements of the Human Reliability Program (HRP). All candidates invited for an interview must consent to be in the HRP at the time of the interview. Only the selected candidate will be subject to the requirements of HRP, which includes a pre-employment background check, a counterintelligence-scope polygraph, medical examination including psychological evaluations, and drug/alcohol testing.
