Position Overview

The successful applicant will work as a Senior Systems Engineer (5+ years) within the Engineering Division, and will be a member of an engineering team deployed to the Chemical and Materials Research (CMR) or Weapons Engineering Tritium Facility (WETF). This position provides systems engineering services including the following: configuration management oversight; implementation of the authorization basis; technical baseline maintenance; monitoring, tracking and trending of major systems; definition of maintenance requirements; troubleshooting; root cause analysis; preparation of detailed corrective maintenance instructions for complex or critical operations; prepares engineered equivalency analysis; provides field implementation of the Conduct of Engineering (COE) Program; performs Responsible Engineer duties in accordance with the COE; provides off-inspection-year CAS inspection data for emergent SSC failures; develops engineering study and design scope requirements and post modification testing requirements; provides selection recommendations for design engineering services and reviews engineering studies, detailed designs, and provides construction inspection support; and ensures adherence to Work Smart Standards (WSS), DOE Orders, and engineering codes and standards for proposed configuration changes.

Key Position Requirements

Demonstrated technical experience in design engineering, systems engineering, or operations relating to the commercial and process industries; demonstrated experience applying engineering practices and principles, and knowledge of typical facility, HVAC, and process systems. Demonstrated experience in nuclear or industrial systems engineering including process controls, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical baseline maintenance. Demonstrated working knowledge of DOE standards applicable to nuclear facility design, operation, and maintenance. Demonstrated ability to communicate well, both written and verbally; proficiency with personal computers. Demonstrated experience working with industry standards including NEC, IEEE, ASME, ANSI, ISA, NESC, and UL. Demonstrated ability to work within project budget and schedule constraints. Active or reinstatable Q-clearance; otherwise the ability to obtain and maintain a Q-Clearance, which normally requires US Citizenship. Demonstrated experience in the design and drafting of system drawings and documents including P&ID drawings. An Active Q clearance is desired. Professional engineering registration and experience in steam system design and maintenance is also highly desirable. BS or MS degree in Mechanical or Electrical engineering. Degree shall be from an ABET accredited college.

Summary

Responsible for assigned activities within an engineering discipline in support of facility design, operation and maintenance. Applies broad and diversified knowledge of engineering principles and practices in the preparation of complex engineering analyses. Performs all aspects of work in engineering operations within discipline. Performs conventional structural design and analysis. Provides system integration within and across disciplines. Provides construction and project support. May lead projects and supervise the work of others. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Utilizes engineering technology to accomplish work. Leads work process improvement to meet customer needs.

Job Duties

  6. Develops resolutions to complex problems that require the frequent use of creativity and where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors.
  7. Performs non-conventional structural design and analysis.
  8. Contributes to the development of organizational goals and objectives.
  9. Works is accomplished without considerable direction.
  10. Exerts significant latitude in determining objectives of assignment, and determines the methods and procedures needed for new assignments.
  11. Leads the design, installation and commissioning of commercial, industrial and safety-related systems.
  12. Utilizes engineering technology tools including CAD, CNC, CAE, etc., programs and develops software tools to resolve complex issues.
  13. Assists with process and instrumentations control.
  14. Prepares documents, studies, and reports associated with facility life-cycles and space requirements as directed.
  15. Provides conventional and innovative engineering construction and project support.
  16. Establishes demand and planned maintenance and predictive maintenance objectives and schedules.
  17. Work is evaluated on completion to ensure objectives have been met.
  18. Promotes a mutually respectful work environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Job Knowledge

  • Expert knowledge of engineering systems and calculations, applications of engineering methods, and application of technology aided engineering tools to conventional and non-conventional facility and operations-based engineering problems.
  • Sound knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods.
  • Expert knowledge of engineering maintenance techniques and construction methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards and guides.
  • Broad knowledge of industry, regulatory, or Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration (DOE/NNSA) complex codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the particular engineering discipline.
  • Expert knowledge of Engineering principles and procedures, design guides, appropriate standards, and administrative practices.
  • Expert knowledge of project and process engineering practices.

Education

  • Position typically requires a baccalaureate degree in engineering from an accredited college or university and, practical work experience to the degree necessary to perform the responsibilities outlined above.
