FEMA Flood Mitigation Personnel To Provide Important Floodproofing & Elevation Information To Residents This Weekend

NEW ORLEANS, La. -- Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Senior Engineer for Building Science and Rick Reduction John Ingargiola and Floodplain Expert Wayne Berggren are hitting the streets this weekend to update residents on the technical guidelines and importance of elevating homes and flood proofing commercial structures.

They will kick off the weekend in lower Jefferson Parish on Saturday at the Lafitte Senior Citizens Center. The community event, led by the University of New Orleans Center for Hazards Assessment, Response & Technology (UNO-CHART) is open to the public. The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Sunday, Berggren will speak on the same mitigation topics at the Community Rebuilding and Flood Protection Expo in Lakeview. The expo will include various presentations and demonstrations at hourly intervals throughout the afternoon. Expo hours are from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The expo, organized by the Louisiana State University AgCenter in cooperation with UNO-CHART, Tulane City Center, Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, Office of Floodplain Regulations and Gulf Coast Bank and Trust is open to the public. Both events lead into the weeklong National Floodproofing Conference & Exposition held in New Orleans.

FEMA coordinates the federal government's role in preparing for, preventing, mitigating the effects of, responding to, and recovering from all domestic disasters, whether natural or man-made, including acts of terror.
