Get Windows Vista: Licensing

Ordering additional licenses for Windows Vista

Have more than one PC that is ready to run Vista? Once you're running Windows Vista on one computer, you will probably want to run it on other computers you own. Now it's easy to get the additional licenses you need to put Windows Vista on your additional computers. (You will need one license for each computer running Windows Vista.)

If you are not upgrading from a previous version of Windows, you can use the additional license program* to acquire a full product version of Windows Vista. If you are upgrading, you can get upgrade versions of Windows Vista for Windows 2000 Professional or Windows XP, or you can move from one edition of Windows Vista to a more capable edition (for example, move from Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate).

Qualifying for additional licenses

To qualify for an additional license for a particular edition of Windows Vista, you must already have a current, valid license for that edition (either a full edition license or an edition upgrade license).

For example, you can qualify for an additional full edition license for Windows Vista Ultimate if you already have a full edition of Windows Vista Ultimate.

Note: Microsoft does not currently support additional licenses for Windows Server. Find additional information.

What you need to know

How to purchase
Purchase online

About Windows Vista Product Keys

A Windows Vista additional license Product Key is an electronic number that "unlocks" Windows Vista and allows it to run. By ordering a new Product Key, you help ensure security for yourself and other Windows Vista customers by preventing the reuse of Product Keys by unauthorized users. Additionally, this method of software license distribution helps prevent piracy by keeping people who have not legally obtained a valid, single-use Product Key from installing Windows Vista on their computers.
