Research Programs

Research at the NCRAR focuses on auditory rehabilitation. In order to optimize clinical care, however, research on diagnosis and prevention also are necessary because Effective rehabilitation requires accurate diagnosis of the condition. Obviating the need for rehabilitation through prevention of hearing loss is preferable to, and more cost effective than, intervention.

The three major research areas of emphasis at the NCRAR include: prevention of hearing loss; diagnosis and assessment, which focuses on finding the best evaluation measures to determine a person's needs for rehabilitation; and a rehabilitative component, which entails the study of rehabilitative issues associated with hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular problems and also includes the development of innovative rehabilitative devices and techniques.

The NCRAR uses a multi-disciplinary approach to research that includes both basic and clinical components to bring diverse perspectives and solutions to common auditory problems.

Our three major research areas are:

  • Diagnosis and assessment of auditory dysfunction,
  • Development of rehabilitation approaches and techniques,
  • Prevention of hearing loss.

The NCRAR is a VA research facility, staffed by VA researchers, carrying out rehabilitation research and development projects of high priority to the hearing health care of veterans.
