District Ranger Rich Jennings manages the District, covering the northern end of Chichagof Island and other smaller islands to the north, in an area that covers about 660,000 acres. The DEIS describes five alternatives. The four action alternatives would make between 17 and 60 million board feet (MMBF) of timber available for harvest within the project area. The significant issues addressed by the alternatives in the DEIS include: 1) deer habitat connectivity; 2) inventoried roadless areas; and 3) timber harvest economics. The Proposed Action, Alternative 2, would provide up to 59.8 MMBF of timber from approximately 4,200 acres within the project area. The timber would be made available in several small sales and one or more larger sales. This alternative calls for construction of about 13 miles of temporary road and about 4 miles of National Forest System roads. Alternative 3 is identified as the preferred alternative. Alternative 3 was developed to minimize impacts to deer habitat connectivity while providing for an economic timber supply. Alternative 3 would provide up to 43.4 MMBF of timber from about 3,300 acres, with 3.9 miles of temporary road and about 2 miles of National Forest System Road construction. The Iyouktug project responds to goals and objectives of the Tongass Forest Plan, which will help move the project area toward the desired conditions described in that plan and meet the needs of Southeast Alaska. The purpose of the Iyouktug Timber Sales project is to:
