to Meet Jan. 9-11 -
(December 21) The Federal Subsistence Board will meet Jan. 9-11 in Anchorage;
topics include proposals for Southeast Alaska subsistence fishing.

Adopts Final Rule on Rural/Nonrural Status Changes -
(December 14) The Federal Subsistence Board adopted a final rule on changes to
the rural or nonrural status of several Alaska communities and areas at a public
meeting in Anchorage on Dec. 13.
- Federal Subsistence Board
to Consider Proposed Changes to Rural/Nonrural Status Dec. 12-13 -
(November 29) The Federal Subsistence Board will hold a public meeting Dec.
12-13 at the Egan Civic and Convention Center in Anchorage to consider a proposed
rule that would change the rural/nonrural status of several Alaska communities
and areas, including the Ketchikan area.
- Revised Environmental Analysis
and Second Decision for the Overlook Project Area Timber Sale Issued -
(November 27) About 4.1 million board feet of Tongass National Forest timber
will be made available from approximately 190 acres in the Overlook Project
Area in central Mitkof Island according to Petersburg District Ranger Patricia
Grantham.

Management Accepting Regional Advisory Council Nominations, Applications

(November 7) The Office of Subsistence Management is accepting applications and
nominations until January 10 to fill seats on the Regional Advisory Councils
that advise the Federal Subsistence Board.

(October 20) The Federal Subsistence Board is seeking public comments
through Oct. 27, 2006 on a proposed rule that would change the rural
or nonrural status of several Alaska communities and areas.

Suggestions on Membership of Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils

(October 17) The Federal Subsistence Board is accepting written comments
and suggestions through Nov. 13, 2006, on alternative methods for assuring
balanced membership on Federal subsistence regional advisory councils.
- Soda Nick Small Sales EA
Available for Review and Comment -
(October 5) The proposal would make about 4 million board feet of saw
timber available to local operators in several small sales on Prince
of Wales Island over several years.
- Forest Service Issues Second
Decision for the Scott Peak Project Area -
(October 4) Southeast Alaska wood products businesses will have another
8.3 million board feet of high-quality Tongass National Forest timber
available under the Scott Peak Project Area decision.
- Federal Subsistence Regional
Advisory Councils Hold Fall Meetings Statewide -
(September 6) The 10 Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils
will meet during the next two months to review proposed changes to Federal
subsistence fishing regulations for 2007-2008 and to call for proposals
to change wildlife regulations for 2007-2008.

for Timber Sale on the Hoonah Ranger District -
(August 25) The Tongass National Forest’s North Zone Planning
Team has developed a proposal to make wood products available from the
Iyouktug valley on northeast Chichagof Island
- Public Assistance Sought
in Planning Management of the Stikine River Corridor -
(August 24) The Wrangell Ranger District has organized a facilitated
“listening session” to gather public input on issues related
to wilderness management of the Stikine River Corridor.
- Ninth Circuit Court of
Appeals Dismisses Lawsuit Challenging Federal Rural Subsistence Priority

(August 23) The Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has dismissed an
appeal of a ruling in a lawsuit that challenged the priority afforded
rural residents to hunt and fish for subsistence on Federal public lands
and waters.
- Secretary Kempthorne Appoints
Federal Subsistence Board Chairman -
(August 18) Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne today announced
the appointment of Michael R. Fleagle as Chairman of the Federal Subsistence
Board.

Seeks Comments on Warehouse Project -
(August 15) The Craig Ranger District, Tongass National
Forest seeks your comments on the Craig Ranger District Warehouse Demolition
and New Warehouse Construction project.

(August 11) The Federal Subsistence Board is accepting proposals through
October 20, 2006 to change subsistence hunting and trapping regulations
on Federal public lands for the 2007-2008 regulatory year.

Announces Proposal for Small Timber Sales -
(August 3) The Yakutat Ranger District has developed a proposal to harvest
up to 500,000 board feet of timber along existing roads in the Yakutat
Forelands.

(May 24) When the gate accessing Blue Lake Road opens Friday, May 26th,
the future maintenance of the road will be reduced from what it has
been in the past.
- Ranger District Alerts Forest
Users of Upcoming "Noisy" Work -
(May 23) Forest Service employees with the Sitka Ranger District are
slated to accomplish some “noisy” work soon on northwest
Baranof Island.
- FS Seeks Public Input for
Proposed Timber Project -
(May 13) The Tongass National Forest has prepared a revised Notice of
Intent seeking public input to prepare a Draft Environmental Impact
Statement for the proposed Baht Timber Project within the Wrangell Ranger
District.
- Federal Subsistence Board
Seeks Comments on Proposal to Revise Federal Subsistence Jurisdiction
to Include Makhnati Island Area -
(May 11) The Federal Subsistence Board is accepting public comment through
June 15, 2006 on a proposed rule to revise the jurisdiction of the Federal
Subsistence Management Program by adding submerged lands and waters
in the area of Makhnati Island, near Sitka.

(May 2) The Federal Subsistence Board will meet May 16-18 at the Downtown
Anchorage Marriott to consider changes to Federal subsistence hunting

- Regional Forester Reverses
Scott Peak Decision -
(April 17) The Scott Peak project is on hold, after Alaska Forest Service
regional forester Dennis Bschor today reversed the Tongass National
Forest supervisor’s decision on the project.

Fishery Closure for Cable Creek -
(April 11) The Craig District Ranger, as in-season manager, is closing
all waters of Cable Creek to fishing from 12:01 a.m., Thursday, April
13, 2006 through 11:59 p.m., May 31, 2006.

(March 31) Federal subsistence fisheries regulation
books for the regulatory year April 1, 2006, to March 31, 2007, are
now available.

Study Reveals Market Trends -
(March 27) A recently completed economic study of timber demand projections
for the next two decades in southeast Alaska explains four alternatives
describing how the forest products industry could develop.
- Limited Artesian Well Draws
in April -
(March 24) Within the next few weeks, the city water supply will switch
temporarily for three weeks from Blue Lake to Indian River.
- Amendment of Tongass Forest
Plan Launched -
(March 21) Tongass National Forest Supervisor Forrest Cole today outlined
the timeline and steps needed to amend the Tongass forest plan in response
to the Ninth Circuit Court decision of last August and the 2004 mid-term
review of the plan, in an address to the Southeast Conference meeting
in Juneau, Alaska.

Report -
(March 10) The Tongass National Forest recently released
its annual Monitoring and Evaluation Report for fiscal 2004.
- Tongass Eyes Motorized
Recreation -
(February 28) The Tongass is taking up OHV issues in light of the national
regulation, announced by the Forest Service in November, concerning
recreational motor vehicle use in national forests and grasslands.
- Unit 2 Deer Planning Subcommittee
Meets Feb. 22, 23 -
(February 15) The Unit 2 Deer Planning Subcommittee is slated to meet
from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 22 and 23 at the Shelter Cove Lodge
in Craig.
- Federal Subsistence Fishery
for Eulachon Closed in Federal Waters in Area 1d - Burroughs Bay Area

(February 9) Ketchikan-Misty Fiords District Ranger Lynn Kolund has
announced that he is acting immediately to protect eulachon stocks in
the Burroughs Bay/Unuk River area north of Ketchikan, Alaska.

Advisory Councils Hold Winter Meetings Statewide -
(February 7) The 10 Federal Subsistence Regional Advisory Councils will
meet during February and March to review proposed changes to Federal
subsistence hunting and trapping regulations for 2006-2007.

(January 25) The public has a new opportunity today to take part in
management of the Tongass National Forest as the forest unveils a new
website.
- Forest Service Approves Scott
Peak Timber Project -
(January 12) The Tongass National Forest recently approved the
Scott Peak timber project involving the harvest of approximately 8 million
board feet of timber from about 350 acres on northeastern Kupreanof
Island within the Petersburg Ranger District.
- Forest Service Announces
Recreation Facility Plan -
(January 6) The Forest Service is crafting a Recreation Site Facility
Master Plan for the nation’s largest national forest.
- Forest Service Proposes Minor
Amendment to 2005 Planning Rule -
(January 4) The Forest Service is seeking public comment on a proposal
to allow the Tongass National Forest to use either the 1982 planning
rule or the 2005 planning rule for adjustments to its Forest Plan that
are required by a recent ruling in the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
