New research over the past half decade provides interesting new views about the causes of past mass extinctions. The well known asteroid/comet impact at the end of the Cretaceous provided explanation for the "K/T" mass extinction, and following on, the community began to regard all mass extinctions as caused by impact. The new data do not support this. Instead, it appears that short term increases in global atmospheric CO2 levels to values from 1000-3000ppm, reduced heat flow from pole to equator, and resulted , in a sluggish, anoxic ocean with high levels of H2S moving into the photic zone from the chemocline. I will finish by looking at the possibility that the start of this process is underway in our time.
