Expressionism and Modern German Painting from the Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection

Overview: The 34 paintings on view represented modern German movements such as the Brücke, Blaue Reiter, Bauhaus, and Neue Sachlichkeit. This exhibition was the first devoted entirely to modern German paintings. Baron Hans Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza had added these works to his family's collection. The exhibition was organized by the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation in collaboration with the National Gallery and the Kimbell Art Museum, Fort Worth, Texas.

Senior curator Andrew Robison selected the paintings. Peter Vergo of the University of Essex, England, contributed to the catalogue essays and notes. An indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities supported the exhibition.
