Cézanne: The Early Years 1859-1872

January 29-April 30, 1989

Overview: 54 paintings, 11 drawings, and 3 watercolors, produced by Paul Cézanne during his formative years, were selected from public and private collections in Europe, Australia, Brazil, Canada, the USSR, and the United States. Sir Lawrence Gowing, curatorial chairman of the Phillips Collection, organized the exhibition. Charles S. Moffett, senior curator and curator of modern painting at the Gallery, was the coordinator at the National Gallery.

Gaillard Ravenel and Mark Leithauser designed the exhibition, and Gordon Anson designed the lighting. Gerald D. Hines Interests supported the exhibition. Additional support was provided by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
