Photographs by Alfred Stieglitz

Overview: The first exhibition at the National Gallery devoted exclusively to photographs, this selection of 118 prints covered all phases of Stieglitz's career with prints from about 1885 to 1937. In 1949, 3 years after Stieglitz's death, Georgia O'Keeffe gave to the National Gallery the "key set" of about 1,600 photographs from his estate. It consisted of the best single original mounted prints made by Stieglitz.

The exhibition was directed and the catalogue prepared by Doris Bry, the only person authorized by O'Keeffe to handle the prints. O'Keeffe made a large contribution toward the expenses of printing the catalogue and the special rematting of many photographs.
