affects us all. Informed consent, euthanasia, and the patient-physician
relationship are examples of such concerns today.
Drawing from the disciplines of medicine and philosophy, Dr. Ezekiel J. Emanuel will speak to these important issues. Dr. Emanuel is Chief of the Department of Clinical Bioethics at the Warren Grant Magnuson Clinical Center. He is also a breast oncologist.
After completing Amherst College, he received his M.Sc. from Oxford in Biochemistry. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and his Ph.D. in political philosophy from Harvard University. His dissertation received the Toppan Award for the finest political sciences dissertation of the year. He was a fellow in the Program in Ethics and the Professions at the Kennedy School of Government of Harvard University.
After completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and his oncology fellowship at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, he joined the faculty at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Dr. Emanuel has been an Associate Professor of Medicine, Social Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology at Harvard Medical School.
He has published widely on advance care directives and end of life care issues, euthanasia, the ethics of managed care, and the physician-patient relationship in the New England Journal of Medicine, The Lancet, The Journal of the American Medical Association, The Annals of Internal Medicine, and many other medical journals. His book on medical ethics, The Ends of Human Life, has been widely praised and received honorable mention for the Rosenhaupt Memorial Book Award by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation. He has received numerous awards including the AMA-Burroughs Wellcome Leadership Award and a Fulbright Scholarship.
Dr. Emanuel served on the ethics section of President Clinton's Health Care Task Force and the National Bioethics Advisory Commis-sion. Dr. Emanuel has been a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and the Brin Professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School.
Dr. Emanuel also serves as the editor of "Ethics Rounds" in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Associate Editor for the Journal of Clinical Ethics and the Journal of Health Communications.
