Approved Production Inspection System (APIS)
An approved production inspection system is an FAA-approved inspection process applicable to products manufactured more than 6 months after the date of issue of the type certificate, supplemental type certificate, or licensing agreement. The manufacturer shall establish and maintain an approved production inspection system (APIS) or obtain a production certificate to ensure that each product conforms to its type design and is in a condition for safe operation.
An approved production inspection system allows the manufacturer to inspect its own products under a system approved by the FAA. However, the manufacturer does not have all the privileges established under a production certificate. The manufacturer must submit a Statement of Conformity, FAA Form 8130-9 (PDF), with each application for an original airworthiness certificate. The FAA or a Representative of the Administrator inspects the aircraft, engine, or propeller, as applicable, and issues an airworthiness certificate.
The approved production inspection system is used most frequently by low-volume manufacturers. To obtain one a production application and approval process must be followed.
