Sharyn McCrumb is best known for her Appalachian “Ballad” novels set in the North Carolina-Tennessee mountains, including The Songcatcher and The Ballad of Frankie Silver. Her most recent novel is St. Dale (Kensington Books, 2005), described as "Canterbury Tales in a NASCAR setting." Her books have appeared on the New York Times Best-Seller and Notable Book lists. In addition to winning the awards for Best Appalachian Novel and Most Notable Book of the Year, she has also received the Agatha, Anthony, Edgar, Macavity and Nero awards. She lives and writes in the Virginia Blue Ridge area.
