Abstract: | (CIT): Dr. Alan Krensky, Director of the Office of Portfolio Analysis and Strategic Initiatives (OPASI) invites you to attend the first OPASI-sponsored WORKSHOP, Fostering Innovation. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together top thinkers in the area of innovation to explore issues and opportunities related to fostering innovation through the NIH. It is our intent that the workshop format will provide an atmosphere where the most current ideas and issues can be freely discussed. The first part of the day will be devoted to discussions of major issues in innovation, stimulated by talks from our panel. The second part of the day will be spent considering the implications of the ideas presented toward a plan to fostering innovation in biomedical research. 8:00 am Introductions 8:10 am Opening remarks (Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Dr. Keith Yamamoto and Dr. Alan Krensky) 8:30 am Mr. Charles Beever, Booz Allen Hamilton Fostering Innovation -- Do We Know What Does and Doesn't Work? 9:15 am Dr. Gerald Pollack, University of Washington Revitalizing the NIH Grants System: Reflections on the Syndrome and Prescriptions for its Cure. 10:15 am Session I. Five five-minute presentations plus 35 minutes of discussion. 11:15 am Session II. Five five-minute presentations plus 35 minutes of discussion. 12:15 - 2:00 pm Lunch. "How to Win a Nobel Prize" by Drs. Peter Agre and Thomas Cech and Recognizing Innovation before it is Widely Recognized as Innovative" by Dr. Erich Jarvis) 2:00 pm Session III. Five five-minute presentations plus 35 minutes of discussion. 3:30 pm Summary and prioritization of recommendations, Drs. Krensky and Yamamoto 5:00 pm Adjourn. |
