Question:

Are there any early lessons can we gain from the 2004 tsunami disaster?

Answer:

This disaster demonstrates the importance of tsunami mapping and preparedness activities and the need for tsunami awareness in the United States. The NOAA-led NTHMP is a Federal and State program that has several components to address the tsunami hazard, primarily in our Pacific coastal States. NOAA’s primary focus has been on developing a tsunami warning system, which is an important component of an overall tsunami program. FEMA has been working in partnership with other Federal and State emergency management and science agencies to improve the level of tsunami hazard awareness, planning, and preparedness.
