Westward by Sea: A Maritime Perspective on American Expansion, 1820-1890

Building the Digital Collection

The G.W. Blunt White Library, Mystic Seaport received an award in the 1998/1999 round of the Library of Congress/Ameritech National Digital Library Competition to support the digitization of items from a number of individual sources and assembly into an online collection. Sources for this collection include: manuscript collections, newspaper articles, serials, photographs, pamphlets. All items were scanned by staff of Mystic Seaport. Searchable text was generated for most textual items, either by optical character recognition (OCR) or by transcription. Files for service copies of the images and for the documents were delivered to the Library of Congress. Master copies of the images at higher resolution are stored at Mystic Seaport. Bibliographic records in MARC format were also delivered to the Library of Congress for indexing as part of American Memory.
