Since 1952, Philadelphia VA Medical Center has been improving the health of the men and women who have so proudly served our nation. We consider it our privilage to serve your health care needs in any way we can. Services are available to more than 361,000 veterans living in an eight county area of Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The Philadelphia VA Medical Center (PVAMC) is a VA tertiary referral center for the eastern half of the VA Stars & Stripes Healthcare Network, VISN 4. The Medical Center provides health care for more than 370,000 veterans living in America's fifth largest metropolitan area and surrounding seven counties in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Community Based Outpatient Clinics are located in Horsham, Pennsylvania and Gloucester and Fort Dix, New Jersey. The Medical Center has 133 operating beds, and supports a 220-bed Nursing Home referred to as the Community Living Center. 

The Philadelphia VA Medical Center has the distinction of being awarded several National Research Centers of Excellence including: Parkinson’s Disease Research, Education and Clinical Center (PADRECC); Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC); Center for Health Equity, Research and Promotion (CHERP); Center of Excellence for Substance Abuse Treatment and Education (CESATE) and Regional Sleep Center. Philadelphia VAMC has been selected as one of 21 Polytrauma Rehabilitation Network Sites, Level II. This center will provide a high level of expert care, and clinical and ancillary resources for the amputee population. The center will concentrate medical specialists, physical therapists and counselors in a one-stop care setting for veterans who need continued rehabilitation. 

The PVAMC is affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania’s Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Dental Medicine and provide training for medical interns, residents and fellows. We also maintain teaching affiliations with eleven other academic institutions in the areas of Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental, Nutrition, Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, and Social Work.

Research is an important component of the Medical Center’s mission. There are more than 225 research projects underway involving all clinical disciplines, with more than 155 investigators and technicians. Major research emphasis includes: substance abuse, nutrition, Rheumatology-Immunology, cardiology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, urology, anesthesiology, orthopedics, general surgery, rehabilitation medicine, Gulf War illnesses, Hepatitis C and health services research and development.
