Acknowledgments

From its beginnings in 1995, this collection has been shaped by the contributions of many people. The collection would not have been possible without the support of the W. K. Kellogg Foundation, which launched and sustained its creation with a generous grant. Early in the process of collection development, the Library benefited from the expert advice of Richard Hulsey and Jane Ratner of the Battle Creek Public Library in Battle Creek, Michigan; Michael Fox and Patrick Coleman of the Minnesota Historical Society; Ann Regan of the Minnesota Historical Society Press; and James Hensen of the Wisconsin Historical Society. At the Library of Congress, the collection was selected and shaped by reference librarians Anne Toohey and Barbara Walsh, with guidance from the late Judith Austin, formerly head of the Library's Local History and Genealogy Reading Room. Clarence Mondale, Emeritus Professor of American Civilization at The George Washington University, provided special scholarly expertise by writing the collection's introductory essay.
