On August 21, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Administrator Mark B. McClellan, M.D., Ph.D., announced a solicitation to implement the Medicare Senior Risk Reduction Demonstration. The demonstration is designed to assess whether risk reduction programs that have been effective in the private sector can be tailored to help Medicare beneficiaries improve their health and reduce the need for health care services. The demonstration will address multiple health risk factors that contribute to chronic diseases, and the underuse of Medicare preventive benefits. In announcing the solicitation, Dr. McClellan noted: "Personal involvement and personal choices have a huge impact on health and health care. The Senior Risk Reduction Demonstration will help us determine whether more intensive support can help our beneficiaries stay well and prevent complications from chronic diseases." Approximately 85,000 Medicare fee-for-service beneficiaries will be invited to participate in the three-year demonstration. After completing a health risk assessment, participants will receive information tailored to their particular health risk factors, as well as referrals to community resources to help support them in making lifestyle changes. Final selection of up to five existing health promotion, disease prevention, and risk reduction organization is expected by Spring 2007. This demonstration is a key component of the CMS initiative "My Health, My Medicare." The initiative will help seniors take better care of their health by providing information, resources, and support to make lifestyle changes and obtain preventive services such as cancer screenings and immunizations.
