Program Elements

EES has a very diverse portfolio with a wide range of customers. The Division’s two largest programs have to do with repository science and radioactive waste. The Yucca Mountain Project (YMP) involves research on the natural system around the nation’s proposed geologic repository for High Level Waste and Spent Nuclear Fuel. The Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP) is the nation’s underground storage for plutonium-contaminated wastes (TRU) produced by nuclear weapons research and production. The EES mission for WIPP is in characterization and the Carlsbad group provides core scientific and engineering expertise to the DOE field office overseeing WIPP.

Other programs of note include: Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) in the Tropical Western Pacific, Environmental Remediation and Well Monitoring, Laboratory Directed Research and Development (LDRD), Nuclear Explosion Monitoring, but the program office is in the Associate Directorate for Threat Reduction, so it is referred to as a Threat Reduction, or TR, program), Integrated Contractor work (IC), and Fossil Energy (DOE).
