Biography:

Elizabeth Teles is the Lead Program Director for the Advanced Technological Education (ATE) program in DUE. Dr. Teles is also a program director for mathematics in DUE as well as a member of DUE's senior management staff. In addition to her work for the ATE program, she works as a program director in the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) program, Computer Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Scholarships (CSEMS) program, and STEM Talent Expansion Program (STEP). At NSF, she organized and later edited the proceedings for three conferences: Partners in Progress, Gaining the Competitive Edge, and Investing in Tomorrow's Teachers. She also served as one of the primary authors of the ATE program. She is the first permanent NSF program director with a background in two-year college education. In 1994 she received the NSF Program Director's Award for Excellence for the Directorate for Education and Human Resources for her work in initiating the ATE program; and in 2002 she received the Director's Award for her work in broadening participation in NSF activities by two-year colleges. At NSF, she served on a short-term assignment as the NSF Science Manager at the South Pole Station during the summer of 1999, for which she was awarded the Antarctica Service Medal. She was also selected as one of the Department of State-NSF Embassy Fellows and served her fellowship in August and September of 2001 at the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine. Dr. Teles served as DUE's Acting Division Director from October 2002 to October 2003.

Dr. Teles taught mathematics at Montgomery College in Takoma Park, Maryland, from 1969 to 1991, when she joined NSF, first as an NSF/AACJC Fellow and then as a program director. Before joining NSF, she served as mathematics discipline coordinator at Montgomery. Two of her interests are the thoughtful introduction of technology into the mathematics curriculum and active student learning. She has also had experience in high school teaching and has worked in various programs at the University of Maryland, including supervision of graduate teaching assistants. In 1991 she received the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics Outstanding College Teaching Award.

Dr. Teles holds a B.A. in mathematics from Winthrop College, an M.A.T. in mathematics from Johns Hopkins University, and a Ph.D. in mathematics education from the University of Maryland. In November 1994, she received the Presidential Award from the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges for outstanding contributions and dedicated service to two-year college mathematics education. In 1996 she received the National Council for Resource Development Special Recognition Award for outstanding service to two-year colleges, and in 2000 she received the Mathematical Association of America's award for service to mathematics.
