Abstract
The evidence base for science and health policy consists of many independent
research studies. Combining evidence from multiple studies that differ in
important ways presents challenges that have been addressed in other areas
of scientific research and are now beginning to be addressed in HIV prevention
research. Syntheses can enhance statistical power and produce summary evidence
that is more generalizable than individual primary research.
