Estimated Proved and Unproved Oil and Gas Reserves
Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf, December 31, 1995

OCS MMS 96-0061

by Suzan M. Bacigalupi, Clark J. Kinler, David A. Marin, Michael T. Prendergast

As of December 31, 1995, about 2.33 billion barrels of petroleum liquids (both oil and natural gas condensate) and about 27.5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas are estimated to exist as “remaining proved reserves” in 754 proved active fields of the Gulf of Mexico Outer Continental Shelf. This report indicates a decrease of about 0.19 billion barrels of liquid (oil and gas condensate) and a decrease of 1.8 trillion cubic feet of gas in remaining proved reserves as compared to the December 31, 1994, estimates. New proved field discoveries account for an increase of 0.04 billion barrels of liquid and 1.4 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Unproved reserves as of December 31, 1995, have been estimated to be 1.20 billion barrels of oil and 4.1 trillion cubic feet of gas. These reserves are associated with 76 unproved active fields. This makes a total of 830 active fields located in Federal waters.

Original proved reserves are estimated to have been 12.01 billion barrels of oil and 144.9 trillion cubic feet of gas from 899proved fields under the Federal submerged lands in the Gulf of Mexico. Included in this number are 145 fields that are depleted and abandoned; not included are the 76 unproved active fields. As of December 31, 1995, cumulative production from these 899 fields was 9.68 billion barrels of oil and 117.4 trillion cubic feet of gas.
