The Assessments Center, located in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, processes all violations into civil penalty cases, which includes generating the proposed assessment document and mailing proposed assessments to mine operators and miners' representatives. The Assessments Center also conducts research and analysis of mine ownership. Through the use of Legal Identity Reports and other information, the Assessments Center develops chronological histories of all operators, controllers, and independent contractors, both foreign and domestic, who are accountable and/or legally responsible for maintaining health and safety at all mines under MSHA's jurisdiction. The Assessments Center can be contacted on (570) 826-6431. |
