National Security Challenge

Access to secure supplies of affordable and clean energy is essential for economic and social wellbeing and a crucial element of national security. Current dependence on foreign sources for oil, increasing dependence on natural gas, and the growing concern over the environmental consequences of the use of fossil fuels challenge us to rethink the national (and international) energy portfolio. No single fossil fuel (conventional or unconventional) or non-fossil source of energy (nuclear, solar, geothermal, or biofuels) can be developed quick enough to address our growing needs over the next few decades. We will need to develop all as each can contribute significantly to a robust portfolio that guarantees the nation affordable, environmentally sound energy. The need to integrate new technologies into the existing energy infrastructure requires very careful systems analysis and technology development.

Los Alamos National Laboratory is a multidisciplinary institution focused on addressing current, evolving, and future issues of national security. Energy security is increasingly one such key issue. No other organization has a more comprehensive and better science and technology base and advanced capabilities in fundamental science, technology, engineering, advanced materials, modeling, simulations, and analysis of complex systems. Many of the fundamental developments and underpinning science in the areas of nuclear weapons, safeguards & security, advanced reactors and fuel cycles, proliferation detection & nonproliferation, biotechnology, nanomaterials, and novel membranes and catalysts originated at Los Alamos. In response to the president's call, Laboratory management has designated energy security as one of the five science goals and expects to leverage, develop, and focus institutional resources and capabilities in a coordinated and cohesive way to address the energy challenge.

Vision

To develop the science, technology, and analysis capability to help the nation maintain secure and affordable access to environmentally sound energy and increase its competitive edge and security.

Mission

The energy council will assist the PAD-STE in the planning, integration of, and investment in, human resources, science, technology, engineering, and critical infrastructure required to address the urgent and critical problem of national energy security.
