Hazardous Trees Warrant Lockett Meadow Campground Closure

For Immediate Release

Date: October 10, 2008

Contact: Supervisor's Office (928) 527-3600

Flagstaff, AZ —The Coconino National Forest is temporarily closing Lockett Meadow Campground beginning today, Oct 10, due to the significant amount of hazard trees adjacent to each of the camp sites.

Over 150 dead-standing aspen trees have the potential to fall within the developed campground.  To provide for the safety of the numerous visitors, the camp sites will be closed to overnight camping until all the hazard trees are removed.  “Aspen trees are notorious for falling when their roots die,” says Brian Poturalski, Recreation Staff Officer for the Peaks and Mormon Lake Ranger District.  “With the high level of use at Lockett Meadow – especially this time of year – combined with the recent and forecasted high-wind events, this is something we need to do for public safety.”

But there are still plenty of healthy aspen throughout the area, and Lockett Meadow will remain open for day use.  Visitors should use caution when visiting the meadow.  Be aware of your surroundings – look up and around for dead branches or trees.

In addition, high-clearance vehicles are recommended for Forest Road 522 (Lockett Meadow Road) because of current road conditions.
