National History Day 2008

Overview

The National Archives Mid Atlantic Region is pleased to be the Regional Coordinator for Philadelphia's participation in National History Day! We are also representing the region on the advisory team for National History Day in Pennsylvania.

Each year, thousands of middle and high school students and teachers participate in National History Day (NHD), a year-long educational program that culminates in a national contest every June. The National History Day program provides a unique opportunity for students to gain first-hand experience conducting historical research and producing historical exhibits, essays, documentaries, media projects and performances.

Participation in the NHD program begins at the local level, where regional activities feed state and national competitions. Philadelphia will hold its regional event on March 12-13, 2008 at the National Constitution Center. National Constitution Center. Over thirty-two participating partners have joined together to bring the NHD Program to Philadelphia! A variety of activities for parents, students, and educators are being offered across Philadelphia, building up to the national contest. Students and teachers are encouraged to take advantage of the rich array of local history resources in our community -- libraries, museums, and historic sites -- to pursue topics of local, regional, or national interest in conjunction with the 2008 theme: Conflict and Compromise.
