Aelbert Cuyp

Overview: 44 paintings and 45 drawings were presented in this first international loan exhibition devoted to the work of the 17th-century Dutch landscape painter, Aelbert Cuyp. The Dutch countryside, biblical and mythological images, portraits, and views of Dutch harbors were among the subjects depicted in the exhibition, which gave an overview of the artist's career.

The exhibition was organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in cooperation with the National Gallery, London, and the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Arthur K. Wheelock Jr., curator of northern baroque paintings, National Gallery of Art, was the curator. Shell Oil Company Foundation was the sponsor. The exhibition was supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
