Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States with approximately 130,000 new cases diagnosed each year. Speaking at a presentation in the Medicine for the Public lecture series, Dr. Steven Libutti of the National Cancer Institute, says there are a number of new strategies being used to detect and treat colon cancer.

(LIBUTTI):
"We've worked very hard through a variety of clinical trials to elucidate new imaging techniques which help us to detect colon cancer recurrence and the one that we've found to be most useful is a PET scan using fluorodeoxyglucose. Once we detect these early recurrences we have a variety of weapons at our disposal such a surgical resection - with or without anti-angiogenic agents – radio frequency oblation, isolation liver perfusion, and finally continuos hyperthermic partioneal perfusion for carcinomatosis."
