National Bullying Prevention Campaign
Satellite Video Teleconference
Health Resources and Services Administration, US Department of Health and Human Services
and Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, U.S. Department of Education Jointly Sponsor
Teleconference
On Monday, April 19th from 7:30 to 9 p.m. EDT,
professionals who work with young people had the opportunity to tune into a live, interactive satellite
video teleconference and Web cast focusing on bullying prevention tips and strategies offered by
"Take a Stand. Lend a Hand. Stop Bullying
Now!," the Health Resources and
Services Administration's (HRSA's) National Bullying Prevention Campaign.
Jointly sponsored by HRSA, the Maternal and Child Health Bureau, and the U.S. Department of Education's
Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools, the teleconference was designed to help raise awareness of, and
offer important information about, the serious problem that bullying poses for our nation's schools and
communities. A key objective of the teleconference was to inspire effective bullying prevention efforts
at the state and local level by providing educators and school administrators, health and safety
professionals, law enforcement and justice officials, mental health professionals, those who work with
youth organizations, and other concerned adults and students with specific information about best
practices and critical "next steps" that should be pursued.
Broadcast via satellite television and Web cast over the Internet, the teleconference took the form of
a working "town hall" meeting with hundreds of educators and community leaders around the country.
Over 100 local event sites across the U.S. tuned in to:
- Access extensive information about effective bullying prevention strategies and learn about several successful prevention programs already in existence; and
- Engage in post-event discussions on how to improve bullying prevention efforts in their schools and communities
The teleconference was moderated by former CNN anchor and current ABC7/WJLA-TV news anchor, Leon
Harris, and panelists included:
- Dr. Peter van Dyck, Associate Administrator for Maternal and Child Health, Maternal and Child Health Bureau
- William Modzeleski, Associate Deputy Under Secretary, U.S. Department of Education's Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools
- Donna Mazyck, Health Services Specialist, Maryland State Department of Education
- Dr. Susan Limber, Institute on Family and Neighborhood Life, Clemson University
- Officer Tony Woollen, National Association of School Resource Officers
