Passes and Permits

A fee is charged to use these recreation sites and facilities in the national forests of Alaska:

The cabins, Pack Creek and Auke Village Recreation Area Shelter require advance reservations (for Auke Village, call 907-586-8800) The others are pay-on-arrival.

Special Use Permits
Commercial activities or facilities in a national forest are called special uses and require a permit from the Forest Service. Typical special uses include outfitting and guiding, commercial filming, communication sites, roads or utility lines, ski areas and large gatherings. Permits are often limited and applications can take a long time to process because of requirements such as environmental analysis. Please see the "Details" links to the right for more information.

Special Forest Products Permits
Special forest products are non-timber biological resources that are used for subsistence, personal, spiritual, educational, commercial, and scientific use. Examples are mushrooms, boughs, Christmas trees, bark, ferns, moss, burls, berries, cones, conks, herbs, roots, and wildflowers. Also included are cuttings (such as of willow used for restoration) and transplants (as for landscaping purposes). Special forest products do not include saw-timber, pulpwood, cull logs, small round-wood, house logs, utility poles, minerals, animals, animal parts, rocks, water and soil (except for research samples where soil microorganisms are the target product). Gathering special forest products requires a permit.

The Golden Access Passport is available to anyone who is blind or permanently disabled. It grants entrance to any national park, monument, historic site, recreatin area or wildlife refuge, and gives the same 1/2 price discount as the Golden Age Passport. There is no cost to get the pass.

The Golden Eagle Passport grants entrance to any national park, monument, historic site, recreatin area or wildlife refuge. It costs $65 and is good for one year from the purchase date.

Where entry is by private vehicle, all three passports admit the holder along with everyone else in the vehicle.
