Churchill's Biographer Sir Martin Gilbert to Speak at The National Archives
Washington, DC…On Monday, October 17, Sir Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill's official biographer, will discuss his critically acclaimed new work, "Churchill and America" (2005, Simon & Schuster) at 7 pm in the William G. McGowan Theater. Sir Gilbert will sign copies of his book following his lecture. This free lecture will take place at the National Archives Building, located at Constitution Avenue at 7th Street, NW.
Called a "…richly textured and deeply moving portrait of greatness," by the Los Angeles Times and "A masterpiece of scholarship," by The Independent (London), "Churchill and America" explores the close relationship that Sir Winston Churchill cultivated with Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Sir Gilbert also describes how Churchill's diplomacy preserved democracy in Europe.
During two world wars, Winston Churchill was the main British voice urging the closest possible cooperation with the United States. Churchill recognized the power of the United States, telling his cabinet to "Never be separated from the Americans," and developed faithful and strong ties in the first half of the 20th century. "Churchill and America" creates an intriguing portrait of Churchill's incredible seventy-year relationship with the United States.
