WELCOME TO THE WRIISC-NJ

WE ARE THE WAR RELATED ILLNESS AND INJURY STUDY CENTER LOCATED IN NEW JERSEY

Based on scientific & clinical excellence, the U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs established two War-Related Illness and Injury Study Centers (WRIISCs) nationwide in May 2001; one is located at the VA New Jersey Health Care System in East Orange, NJ and the other at the VA Medical Center in Washington, DC. The assessment team at the New Jersey WRIISC has particular expertise in diagnosis, management, and knowledge of deployment related persistent fatigue, pain, cognitive and sleep problems.

The central mission of the New Jersey WRIISC is to better meet the health care needs of veterans with deployment related health concerns and symptoms. To perform this mission, the WRIISC uses a multidisciplinary team with different backgrounds but common goals. These goals are to:

  1. Provide clinical services to veterans with deployment-related health concerns and illnesses to improve their health-related quality of life;
  2. Advance knowledge of ways to care for veterans with medically unexplained symptoms to improve their health-related quality of life;
  3. Advance knowledge of and improve communication among veterans, the health care community and researchers regarding deployment-related health concerns and illnesses;
  4. Advance knowledge of medically unexplained symptoms in veteran and other populations.

Critical strategies to attain these goals include partnering with the WRIISC in Washington DC and taking program and research results to VA facilities and veterans across the nation.

U.S. veterans deployed to hostile areas and with deployment related health concerns and/or symptoms are eligible for a free, individualized WRIISC evaluation. We currently offer two types of evaluations: Veterans with Difficult to Diagnose Health Problems and Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Veterans without Difficult to Diagnose Health Problems.
