Be Active Your Way VA!

VA proudly supports the US Department of Health and Human Services' 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. The basic message of the guidelines (for adults) is:

  • For all individuals, some activity is better than none, but more is better.
  • For substantial health benefits, do at least 150 minutes each week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, or 75 minutes each week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity.
  • All adults should include muscle strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups on two or more days per week.

A new health topic has been added to the Spotlight on Health.
The Spotlight for January is - Weight Management.

The US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has issued updated recommendations for prostate cancer screening

  • Screening is not recommended for men > 75 years (Grade "D" recommendation).
  • The USPSTF found insufficient evidence to recommend for or against screening in men < 75 years ("I" statement).

The complete Recommendation and Rationale statement and Evidence Review is available at the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality* website and are also published in the August 5th issue of Annals of Internal Medicine.

The VA National Center for Health Promotion, Office of Veterans Health Education and Information, and the Office of Public Health and Environmental Hazards, has developed a library of materials on healthy living to enable veterans to take control of their own health. Please click here to view.
