Interim Report on the Dolphin Mortality Event in St. Joseph Bay, Florida

NOAA scientists announced the release of the Interim Report on the Dolphin Mortality Event in St. Joseph Bay, Florida. This year’s most dramatic Unusual Mortality Event (UME) claimed the lives of 107 bottle-nosed dolphins. NCCOS Center programs played major roles in the initial response and the on-going investigations to determine the cause. The CCEHBR Marine Biotoxins and Marine Mammal Programs participated in sampling during the event and conducted HAB toxin analyses and phytoplankton species identifications, CCMA provided remote sensing images to locate HABs in the area, and the CSCOR MERHAB program provided Event Response funds to facilitate investigations by Florida State resource managers.
