Dwight MacKay was born April 7, 1945, in Billings, Montana. He was raised on a ranch and attended grade school in Roscoe, Montana from 1951-1959. Dwight attended high school at Shattuck School, a four-year military academy in Fairbault, Minnesota, from 1959 to 1963. He continued his education at Rocky Mountain College, graduating in 1969 with a degree in Business Administration. In addition to Dwight’s four years of military academy training, he was a six-year member of the Montana National Guard and served in the 163rd Armored Calvary Unit.

He entered graduate school at Eastern Montana College in 1971 after working as a Billings-based consumer specialist for Ralston Purina Company for two years. That same year, he was selected to begin the first juvenile division in the Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Department. He later transferred to the 13th Judicial District Court and worked as a hearings officer for juvenile probation in Yellowstone, Carbon and Stillwater Counties. In January of 1979, he was named Director of the Adolescent Crisis Intervention Unit, a branch of the District Court. He has more than 11 years of law enforcement experience gained with the Sheriff’s Department and in Youth Court Services work.

In 1982, Dwight was nominated by the Republican Party and went on to win the commissioner seat in District #3, Yellowstone County. He was reelected on November 8, 1988 for a second term as County Commissioner. In 1991, he was selected as the State Director for United States Senator Conrad Burns, to coordinate Senator Burns’ state operations. In 1995, he left that position to make his bid for Montana’s Congressional seat. In August of 1996, he was reinstated as State Director for Senator Burns.

On January 25th 2002, Dwight became the first United States Marshal nominated by President George W. Bush to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate. He took the Oath of Office on February 21, 2002, and now serves as the United States Marshal for the District of Montana.

Dwight and his wife Maggie have been married for more that 40 years and have two grown children, Tom 35, Sarah, 32. He has been involved with the MacKay family ranch in Roscoe, all of his 62 years.

Some of Dwight’s other involvements include: St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Deaconess Foundation Board, Billings Rotary Club, Westerners.
