Our ancestors of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa Indians came from the Great Lakes Regions in the late 1700's, and a lot of our people migrated from Canada. They were primarily trappers, traders, entrepreneurs, guides, and caretakers of the land. North Dakota's first community was built and developed by the Chippewa and Metis people. The Red River Valley and North Dakota were prime hunting territory of the Chippewa. The "Red River Cart" trail which is so greatly talked about in history was used in trading between the Chippewas and the Red River Valley communities.
The Turtle Mountain Chippewa played a major part in the development of North America. The Native Americans are a dynamic and adventurous people. The reservation is the heart of rich tribal and spiritual life. The Native Americans take great pride in keeping their culture and heritage alive today.
